Sung Hong Kim is Professor Emeritus of architecture and urbanism at the University of Seoul. He studied architecture at Hanyang University in Seoul (B.S.), and as a recipient of a Korean Government Overseas Scholarship, he continued his studies at the University of California at Berkeley (M.Arch.) and Georgia Tech (Ph.D.). During his tenure at the University of Seoul (1997–2025), he was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington in 2006, and served as Provost of the Planning and Research Office from 2007 to 2009.
He participated as a Co-Commissioner of the exhibition, <City of the Bang> for the Korean Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Biennale. He organized the exhibition <Megacity Network: Contemporary Korean Architecture>, which traveled to Frankfurt, Berlin, Tallinn, Barcelona, and Seoul from 2007 to 2010. As director, he curated <The FAR Game: Constraints Sparking Creativity> for the Korean Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale.
Prof. Kim has authored numerous books on Seoul’s architecture and urbanism, including Seoul Solutions (Korean, 2020), The FAR Game (SPACE Books, 2016), Street Corner Architecture (Korean, 2011), New Imagination of Urban Architecture (Korean, 2009), and Contemporary Korean Architecture: Megacity Network (Jovis Verlag, 2007, Co-author & Editor). His new book, Seoul Urban Architecture: Rising from the Crushing Bowl, was published by Park Books in January 2026.
Since 2012, he has been invited to lecture on Seoul’s urban architecture at universities and institutions worldwide. Since 2021, Prof. Kim has served as Curatorial Director of the inaugural exhibition Building Life After the Korean War: Korean Urban Architecture, 1950-2010 at Korea's first National Museum of Urbanism and Architecture, scheduled to open in Spring 2027.
김성홍 서울시립대 건축학부 명예교수. 한양대(건축공학사)를 졸업하고 국비유학생으로, 버클리대(M.Arch), 조지아텍(Ph.D in Architecture)에서 건축설계와 이론을 공부했다. 서울시립대 재직 기간 (1997~2025) 중 워싱턴대학교 풀브라이트 연구교수 (2006), 기획연구처장 겸 산학협력단장 (2007~2009) 을 지냈다.
다수의 연구논문과 저서를 발간했다. 주요 저서로 『Megacity Network』 (2007), 『도시건축의 새로운 상상력』, (2009), 『길모퉁이 건축』, (2011), 『The FAR Game』 (2016, 공저), 『서울 해법』, (2020) 이 있다. 건축 및 도시학 분야의 세계적인 저명 출판사인 Park Books에서 『Seoul Urban Architecture: Rising from the Crushing Bowl』 를 2026년 1월 출간했다.
2004년 베니스비엔날레 건축전 한국관 부커미셔너로 <방의 도시, City of the bang>전시기획에 참여했다. 2005년 한독 퍼블릭스페이스 포럼 <Korea-Germany Public Space Forum>을 기획했다. 2007~2010년 프랑크푸르트, 베를린, 탈린, 바르셀로나, 한국에서 열린 <메가시티 네트워크: 한국현대건축전>을 총괄 기획했고, 2016년 베니스비엔날레 건축전 한국관 <용적률 게임: 창의성을 촉발하는 제약>의 예술감독을 맡았다. 2012년 이래 세계 주요 도시의 대학과 기관에 초청되어 서울의 도시건축에 관한 특강을 해오고 있다. 2021년부터 2027년 봄 개관 예정인 최초의 국립도시건축박물관 개관전 <삶을 짓다: 한국 도시건축, 1950-2010>의 전시감독을 맡고 있다.
