건축과 도시 삶의 역사를 통해 바라본 대한민국 수도 서울

『서울 도시 건축』은 40년 넘게 서울에서 살며 일해 온 건축가이자 교육자의 시선을 통해, 서울의 도시와 건축이 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 강렬하고 독창적으로 탐구한 책이다.

Seoul Urban Architecture is a powerful and original study of Seoul’s urban and architectural evolution, told through the lens of an architect and educator who has lived and worked in the city for over four decades.

In his book, which is part memoir, part cultural history, and part urban analysis, Sung Hong Kim traces how South Korea’s capital—once a walled city shaped by Confucian ideals—has become a sprawling, vertical metropolis marked by rapid modernization, deep structural contradictions, and a fierce, creative resilience.

Over the course of the three years and several conversations with Professor Kim, we started to look at the different layers of architecture in Seoul as a kind of a road map to the evolution of the Korean psyche and the development of Korean culture and the Korean nation from a third world nation to a first world nation that became an economic powerhouse and is having cultural and intellectual influence in the world widely and that's eventually what I think we were able to accomplish.

So I think this book is obviously great for anyone interested in architecture but also for anyone who is interested in this most rapid rise of a nation from war, degradation, occupation to becoming independent to becoming an economic powerhouse and now having a great cultural and intellectual influence in the world.

Sung Hong Kim’s book, Seoul Urban Architecture, covers a 2,000 year history of the city's gestation to contemporary times. It is very important that this history roots the city in time and space and explains its particularity, because otherwise, seen from a distance, all South-east Asian cities in their dense development tend to appear to be very similar. And yet, evidently, they have distinct characteristics.

This is Sung Hong Kim’s achievement: to explain why there are these particularities and to make it clear to the reader that the convulsive histories – the colonialization by the Japanese, the war of the 1950s – had a major impact on, on one hand, influencing the development of urban architecture and design, but as well as clearing the path for modern civil architecture and urban design.

This is the important lesson to learn from this book. Sung Hong Kim also explains why there is a nexus between urban development, legislation, politics and the social patterns of life, with the emergence of a particular Korean architecture that can only have happened under these circumstances.

So, the book explains on one hand the generic nature of urban development in Southeast Asia, but also the idiosyncratic character of Seoul, its urban design, and its architecture. The 13 examples at the end of the book whet one's appetite for more specific architecture, as they only give a small glimpse of the extraordinary talent that clearly is at work in Seoul and in Korea.

김성홍의 『서울 도시 건축: 절구통에서 튀어 오르다』는 한국의 자연을 주제로 이야기를 시작한다. 나는 15년 전 용산공원 국제설계공모에서 김성홍을 처음 만났다. 당시 심사 과정에서 인상 깊은 논쟁이 하나 있었는데, 한 외국 팀의 설계안을 두고 한국인 심사위원들이 “용의 등 위에 길을 놓아서는 안 된다”라며, 언덕 능선을 따라 배치된 동선을 지적하던 장면이었다.

The book, Seoul Urban Architecture: Rising from the Crushing Bowl, by Sung Hong Kim, starts with landscape as its central theme.

I first met Sung during the Yongsan Park Competition fifteen years ago. At one point during the jury review, there was a big discussion prompted by a critique from Korean colleagues, who commented on a foreign competitor’s entry by saying, “One never places a path on the back of a dragon.”

What is interesting about the book is that it brings us back to the cradle of the mountains in which Seoul sits, linking the Han River to the surrounding mountain ranges. Sung describes Seoul as a brass rice bowl surrounded by layers of mountains—containing the spirit of the ancestors. This gives a unique perspective on the founding principles of Seoul for a foreigner like me.

Overview of the Book

The book traces the evolution of urban planning and architecture in Seoul since the Korean War against the backdrop of a tumultuous history of subjugation and degradation that began soon after Seoul was chosen as the nation’s capital in 1392. It examines the way in which Seoul became one of the most populated, densest, and most concentrated cities in the world, posing a myriad of challenges for its inhabitants, and explores how those conditions eventually nurtured a dynamic and vital cultural psyche that is already known globally through Korean music, films, and dramas.

Navigating through four generations of Korean architects grappling with urban, legal, technological, and cultural constraints, the book leads the reader into the creative and innovative ideas coming from the emerging generation of urban architects, who have begun to confront long-held problems endemic to large cities by focusing on the lived experience of residents rather than purely artistic expression. This is the story of a culture refined by its difficult past, which is now prepared to become influential in the global architectural and urban discourse.

The book is among the first comprehensive works written in English to trace the dialectical relationship between the fundamentally conflicting agendas of architecture and urbanism, within the context of political and socio-economic transformations in Seoul. It also represents the first English book offering a critical examination of the intricate historical and geopolitical events between Korea and its neighboring superpowers China and Japan which shaped the similarities and differences in their respective cities and buildings.

김성홍 서울시립대 건축학부 명예교수. 한양대(건축공학사)를 졸업하고 국비유학생으로, 버클리대(M.Arch), 조지아텍(Ph.D in Architecture)에서 건축설계와 이론을 공부했다. 서울시립대 재직 기간 (1997~2025) 중 워싱턴대학교 풀브라이트 연구교수 (2006), 기획연구처장 겸 산학협력단장 (2007~2009) 을 지냈다.

다수의 연구논문과 저서를 발간했다. 주요 저서로 『Megacity Network』 (2007), 『도시건축의 새로운 상상력』, (2009), 『길모퉁이 건축』, (2011), 『The FAR Game』 (2016, 공저), 『서울 해법』, (2020) 이 있다. 건축 및 도시학 분야의 세계적인 저명 출판사인 Park Books에서 『Seoul Urban Architecture: Rising from the Crushing Bowl』 를 2026년 1월 출간했다.

Sung Hong Kim is Professor Emeritus of architecture and urbanism at the University of Seoul. He studied architecture at Hanyang University in Seoul (B.S.), and as a recipient of a Korean Government Overseas Scholarship, he continued his studies at the University of California at Berkeley (M.Arch.) and Georgia Tech (Ph.D.). During his tenure at the University of Seoul (1997–2025), he was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington in 2006, and served as Provost of the Planning and Research Office from 2007 to 2009.

He participated as a Co-Commissioner of the exhibition, <City of the Bang> for the Korean Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Biennale. He organized the exhibition <Megacity Network: Contemporary Korean Architecture>, which traveled to Frankfurt, Berlin, Tallinn, Barcelona, and Seoul from 2007 to 2010. As director, he curated <The FAR Game: Constraints Sparking Creativity> for the Korean Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale.

Prof. Kim has authored numerous books on Seoul’s architecture and urbanism, including Seoul Solutions (Korean, 2020), The FAR Game (SPACE Books, 2016), Street Corner Architecture (Korean, 2011), New Imagination of Urban Architecture (Korean, 2009), and Contemporary Korean Architecture: Megacity Network (Jovis Verlag, 2007, Co-author & Editor). His new book, Seoul Urban Architecture: Rising from the Crushing Bowl, was published by Park Books in January 2026.

Since 2012, he has been invited to lecture on Seoul’s urban architecture at universities and institutions worldwide.
